Second Post - Cockatoo Island

Comments

The next few posts will capture some of my favorite photos from the recent trip to Sydney…. Sydney held its 18th Biennial Art festival, so a lot of it is focused on contemporary art. I have to say, the MCA and Cockatoo Island were really really cool. Cockatoo island held a lot of huge art displays that were super creative and fun to look at. The island itself was a former prison and has a very industrial look to it. Too bad it was quite chilly on that day! Hope you guys enjoy the pics. FIrst set - MCA.

Landed at Sydney and after checking into the hotel… we went out to the Fish Market for a late lunch!  The wife missed it last time and so had to make sure she gets to try a giant mud crab.  This time… we went bigger and got a 1.692 kg crab and had it cooked salt and pepper style.  Soooooooo good.  We also had 18 oysters (3 different kinds) for only 26 AUD.  Incredible when you compare prices to restaurants by the hotels.

Today we are leaving for Sydney as Mrs RHHOG has work meetings next week.  This will be the second time I have visited Sydney since moving to Guangzhou.  Yes, I count my blessings everyday for being able to visit all these places in such a short timeframe.

Looking forward to it as the wife will have the weekend to do stuff before work next week and we may end up staying an extra day also at the end.

For sure on the docket… the wife was very jealous of my mud crab adventure from the fish market last time so I think that’s going to be the first place we hit after we land… can anyone say…. “seafood fest!”.

Will try to keep the blog updated now that I am doing something interesting…

Sydney Conclusion - So, after that mud crab lunch… I stumbled out of the fish market and walked it off for a bit.  Took some more pictures of the beautiful city.  I went back to the hotel and put in another long workout.

The wife had a final work dinner, so I went out to do some souvenir and wine shopping.  Once I got outside, it started to pour!!!  I still managed to get to a wine shop right before they closed and got 4 bottles to bring back to GZ (2 red/2 white).  Next stop… a nice souvenir shop and I bought a couple of things including a cute Wombat stuffed animal for the wife as she’s been working hard.  Something for her to remember the trip by even though she did not have a lot of free time.

As it is still pouring outside, what better way to duck the rain than a few beers.  I went to the supposed “oldest” bar in Sydney (Fortune of War) and had a few very expensive beers.  Tasty though.

I went back to the hotel and met up with the wife and she wants to get out for a bit so we went to a nice cafe/diner in the Rocks and I had my dinner there.  A nice cup of cappucino rounds out the trip in style!

Alrighty… up next is the inlaws and Hong Kong.

Sydney Day 4 Continued - So… my hunt for a mud crab landed me at Nicholas as they had the best price at $24.99/KG for a live mud crab.  I asked the girl behind the counter how it works to get it cooked up and she helped me out.

Basically, you pick a crab and I had her help me pick a good one, and then they weigh it for the crab price.  My crab came in at 1.28 KG or 2.81 lbs.  They then tack on a cooking charge and in this case it’s $10 per KG.  I pay and choose how I want to get it cooked (Singapore Chili!!) and get a number.  They then clean and cut up the crab and walk it over to the kitchen… who cooks it up and yells out my number.  I collect my giant crab and a stack of napkins and chowed down!!!

IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!  Very meaty and super sweet.  The Singapore chili sauce provided and sweet but spicy kick to it.  Very very good.  Now, I can’t imagine how much better that special Singapore Chili crab restaurant is in town, but at about 1/3 of their price… I have to say it’s a bargain!

Sydney Day 3 Cotinued -  After the burger… I walked around a bit more and captured some more cool pictures.  Also ducked into the Sydney Art Museum the last 30 minutes before it closed and saw some cool art.  I would have liked to have more time to visit this art museum in the future as it starts out at ground level and then goes down 4-5 floors… very cool and seems very large too.  They had a special Picasso exhibit, but I got there too late to join the last paid tour.  I did manage to snap a shot of a Picasso film loop that they were showcasing.

After all the walking, I went back to the hotel and went to the gym and ran another 5 miles.  I was so tired and pooped out… that I didn’t eat dinner.  The wife then came back and tell me to get dressed again as a co-worker wants to have drinks so we went up to the 36th floor of the hotel to the bar and had fun chatting and drinking for a bit.  Her co-worker, Chris, scored the best little table at the bar, which had a spectacular view of the harbour, harbour bridge, and the opera house!!!!!!!!!!!!   Amazing!  And yes… I was tired so I did not bring the camera up and take any pictures… sorry.

Sydney Day 3 Continued - after the museum, I headed over to Westfield Mall and near the top level is an amazing food court/restaurant space.  My goal was to try a burger from Charlie & Co just to see what an Aussie burger is like.  Getting there late made it a good deal as they had a special going on… any burger + beer for $20.  Nice!  I got myself a Wagyu burger done Aussie style (red beets) and a Fat Yak beer.  Verdict - very very good!  Juicy and the wagyu beef was delicious.  The beer was great too.

Sydney Day 3 - Australia Museum.  Nice place.  The museum contains fauna and well, mostly natural history displays/artifacts related to Australia.  They did have a special exhibit which showcased Aboriginal art from various groups detailing lives and history of the Canning Stock Route.  Very nice art.

I enjoyed seeing the various animals that are unique to Australia and also the nice dinosaur collection.  All in all, a good time and a cheap activity (relatively) at $15 including the special activity for a pricey city.  After all that walking…. I was really starving….

Sydney Day 3 - Now that we are in HK with the inlaws, I better finish the Australia trip.  So, day 3 promised rain in the forecast, but it turned out to be another beautiful day.  I set out for another long walk towards Hyde Park and the surrounding areas.  These pics are of the walk to and just past St Mary’s.  As stated, one of the highlights is St Mary’s Cathedral.  St Mary’s is the largest church in Australia and is the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney.  It is a beautiful structure on the inside and exquisite on the inside.  Unfortunately, no pictures allowed on the inside.  I then headed over to the Australia Museum, which will be detailed in the next post.
